If you are considering breast augmentation, you already know that it is a surgical procedure to enhance the size and shape of your breasts by using breast implants. Any of the following feelings or conditions may indicate that you are a good candidate for breast augmentation:
- To enhance the body contour of a women who, for personal reasons, feels her breast size is too small.
- To correct a reduction in breast volume after pregnancy.
- To correct deflated or small boobs. Give you something to feel good about. Stop feeling embarrassed about your breasts.
- Weight loss has changed the size and shape of your breasts.
- Dresses that fit well around the hips are often too large at the bust line.
- To balance a difference in breast size, if one of your breasts is noticeably smaller than the other.
- You feel self-conscious wearing a swimsuit or form-fitting top..
- As a reconstructive technique following breast surgery.
The breast consists of milk ducts and glands surrounded by fatty tissue, and covered by skin. The fatty tissue gives the breast its soft feel and shape. Pregnancy (during which the milk glands are temporarily enlarged) and the inevitable effects of gravity over time stretch the skin envelope and change breast shape. A breast implant consists of a silicone elastomer (rubber) shell now most commonly filled with saline solution (salt water) or a cohesive silicone gel. The breast implant is placed either under your breast (sub-glandular position) or under your pectoralis muscle (sub-muscular position).
If the implant is saline-filled, it is usually inserted empty, and then filled once it is in place. One advantage of this type of implant is that it can usually be placed through a small incision. The incision is made as small as possible, either in the breast fold, under the arm (axilla), or around the nipple.
If the implant is gel filled, it can be inserted through a small incision at the areola or under the breast fold- either over or under the chest wall muscle. We will discuss more during your personal consultation with our plastic surgeons. What About The Surgery Itself?
We will evaluate your current physical health and health history before scheduling you for surgery. Breast augmentation is elective surgery. Before you proceed, you and your surgeon will have to decide whether the benefits of breast augmentation surgery outweigh the risks in your case.
The surgery will be performed in our facility or a nearby surgery center. The surgery usually lasts one to two hours. General anesthesia is most commonly used.
How Will I Feel After Surgery? You’ll probably feel somewhat tired and sore for several days following the surgery, and your breasts may remain swollen and sensitive for as long as a month. The full results of your augmentation may not be visible until your breast tissue (and muscle) adjusts. You will most likely be able to return to work within a few days, although you should avoid strenuous activity for at least a couple of weeks. We will tell you more about the usual recovery process and any specific recommendations bases on your individual case. Are you a good candidate? There are four characteristics of a good breast augmentation patient:
- She has specific concerns about the size and shape of her breasts.
- She is internally motivated for herself, not pressured by a husband of partner.
- She has realistic expectations for her post-operative condition.
- She realizes that surgery alone is not going to cause a drastic change in her interpersonal relationships.
Muscle Up Interestingly, the breasts do not contain muscle tissue. But muscle underlies the breasts, therefore working out is not merely an exercise in futility. Exercise can lift and shape the series of muscles located underneath the breast. These muscles, working together with a ligament called Cooper’s ligament, simulate the support of a natural bra. Do not attempt any exercise after your breast surgery until directed to do so by your surgeon. Implants and Breast-Feeding Many women are concerned about being able to breast feed their children after breast surgery. In most cases, breast implants should not affect the ability to breast-feed or produce milk. Even if you experience difficulty breast-feeding, it may not necessarily be related to your breast augmentation-some studies report that 10 to 15 percent of women who have never had breast surgery cannot adequately breast-feed. Breast reduction surgery can further increase the risk of breast-feeding problems. Regardless, it’s important to tell your plastic surgeon if you are planning to have children after any breast surgery. The Switch to Silicone “I have saline implants. Now that silicone implants are available again, should I make the switch?” Silicone may feel somewhat more like natural breast tissue but that doesn’t mean silicone implants are the right choice for every women. If you are happy with the appearance and there is no other reason for implant replacement, you can leave the saline implants alone. However, if you are looking for a change in size or shape, if your implants no longer match your body image, or if you are experiencing any condition that warrants replacement your should consult with your plastic surgeon. Breast Wishes Women explore breast enhancement for a myriad of reasons–a desire to have larger breasts, to return to pre-pregnancy shape, to regain a figure altered by cancer or other trauma or just to turn back the clock.

We use the Keller Funnel
This remarkable yet simple device is used by our plastic surgeons to assist them in placing breast implants into the body. The funnel provides a “no-touch” technique and avoids contact with the patient’s skin which are important factors to consider in breast augmentation surgery.
